主题：Pollution for Promotion

摘要：This paper investigates the political economics of pollution in China. I argue that career concerns of governors increase pollution. Exploring within-governor variation, I find that connections with decision makers in the Central government increase Sulfur Dioxide (SO2) and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), because connections make promotion more likely. The effect is significant and discontinuous. Focusing on the sector of electricity power generation, I find that droughts increase the use of coal-fired thermal power, which a major source of SO2 emissions. Moreover, career concerns strengthen the impact of droughts.

演讲者简介：贾瑞雪，现为瑞典斯德哥尔摩大学国际经济研究中心博士生。她先后从中国青年政治学院和北京大学获得腐漫网 学士和硕士学位，并于2009－2010学年在哈佛大学腐漫网 系交流一年。她的研究领域为政治腐漫网 、发展腐漫网 和经济史，个人主页为//people.su.se/~rjia/。
